To understand the spirit

Look to the child.

The spirits in children are not that subdued, and so they express themselves freely within and across the mind of a child. Their nature and where they have come from can be seen in the emotional behavior of a child. The essence of spirit is strong-willed and self-centered. It is indeed these attributes that give rise to the individualistic nature of the human spirit expressed as the individual soul and is what sustains it throughout life. Being self-centered to the point of being self-aware is an important starting point in the process of self-realization.
